Uno de los alegatos que tienen los usuarios de WhatsApp es la imposibilidad de poder silenciar un contacto o un grupo para la eternidad.
De momento, la que es la mayor aplicación de mensajería instantánea del mundo solo te deja callar a ese insoportable contacto que por algún motivo no puedes bloquear, por solo un año, y cuando este se cumple, hay que navegar por las configuraciones y silenciarlo otra vez.
De acuerdo a lo que informan los, casi siempre, confiables de WABetainfo, esto podría acabar pronto, ya que la opción de "mutear" indefinidamente es una realidad en las versiones beta de la aplicación:

Dado lo anterior, tampoco existen fechas de cuándo sería realidad esto ni menos si será posible primero en Android o iOS. Al menos se siente como una luz de esperanza.
Fuera por mí, desinstalaría la app completamente y solo usaría Telegram, pero en el mundo real la gente prefiere WhatsApp porque es lo más conocido y ya casi una app "por defecto". Hasta las operadoras ofrecen no gastar megas de tu plan en esta, violando la neutralidad en la red, pero en fin, eso pareciera no importarle a nadie.
